Before entering full-time politics, he worked in his family business and also spent some time as a stockbroker. His entry into public life began through student and ideological organisations, after which he formally joined the BJP in the late 1980s.
He gradually rose through the party structure and became an important figure in Gujarat politics. Later, his influence expanded at the national level, especially after becoming BJP President in 2014.
